We are pleased to offer net participants their own personal website on our webserver. Your website can be anything you wish it to be (provided it is primarily ham radio related and the content does not include any indecent or obscene materials). You will have upload permission to your site and able to access it 24/7/365 for updating and content uploads.

We simply ask you to pay a small annual fee of $6.00 (that's $0.50 per month). In order to activate your personal webspace use the "Buy me a Coke" option at the bottom, left side of the NATA front page. Your domain will be activated and set up within 24 hours ready for you to upload your site content. Your domain name will be ".northamericantrafficandawards.net". Proceeds from this new feature will be used to maintain the NATA website and purchase additional web-content enhancements to enhance everyone's online experience here!

Welcome to a New NCS and Awards Processor! PDF Print E-mail

Sunday, 15 March 2009 16:45

Thanks for the great response from several people on our request for additional volunteers to help with the net business! As a result of this I am pleased to announce the following and ask all to thank them for stepping forward!

SATURDAY 75M NCS: K5TRM -- Tandy Martin, K5TRM, has volunteered to step in and take over the Saturday night NCS duties on the SSB net! Tandy gave it a try this past Saturday (March 14th) and did a great job! Please welcome Tandy to the ranks of our Net Control operators!

AWARDS PROCESSOR: KF5RD -- Peter Mann, KF5RD, has volunteered to help out and take over processing awards applications. Peter will also take on the preparation of award certificates down the road. We thank Peter for taking on this important function! Peter will start processing awards applications April 1, 2009. Until then KU0G will continue to process applications to allow us to make the necessary adjustments to the awards submission system on the website.

40M NCS: W5BLH -- Barry Hiddema, W5BLH, will be taking on one of the three 40M SSB nets once they start. April 1st is our start date for the 40M SSB net. The net will operate on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. Start time is TENTATIVELY set for 00z however we have not locked this time down as this article is being written. There is one slot left for an NCS for the 40M SSB net. We'd like to have this locked up before we start the 40M nets. Here's an opportunity for someone with a good 40M antenna to help out!

CONGRATULATIONS, RICH! -- Richard Kelly, KC9MYL is now N9AQ! Rich recently passed his Amateur Extra Class exam and changed his call! Contacts made under his old call count on their own. Work Rich to log his new call for a new Wisconsin log entry!

Use of Club Callsigns on NATA Nets PDF Print E-mail

Wednesday, 18 March 2009 02:42

CLUB CALLSIGNS ARE WELCOME!

The use of club callsigns is permissible on NATA nets. By bringing a club callsign to the net you provide the opportunity for others to work another callsign in your state. We recognize that the use of club callsigns on other nets is a controversial subject. We will not prohibit their use on our nets but we ask all operators to carefully consider the purpose for which these policies exists before bringing club calls to the nets. In order to keep this practice from getting out of control we ask that everyone abide by the following guidelines in using club calls on our nets:

  1. You may bring up to TWO club callsigns to a net. At least one of the club callsigns must be registered to you as the trustee.
  2. Club callsigns do not merit additional turns for each callsign.
  3. When you work the station bringing the call you automatically are assumed to be working the club callsign as well unless you specify otherwise ("for your club only", etc.)
  4. We ask that each station use discretion in limiting the number of times you bring a club station to the nets.
  5. If the trustee of a club has given you permission to use their club callsign you are expected to provide QSL cards/log entries for your operations.
  6. Please help us keep the nets from being flooded with club calls! Post your plans on either the MESSAGE BOARD or the SHOUT BOX on the NATA website. Let's try to keep the ratio of regular callsigns to club callsign in the range from 8:1 to 12:1 (regaular:club) on any given net.
  7. Clubs may apply for NATA awards however ONLY the trustee of the club can make the application and all contacts for awards credit must be made by the registered trustee. A courtesy fee of $2.00 per club award is requested (even if retrieving online). Awards will be titled to the club and sent to the club trustee. The award will show the name of the club, it's callsign, and the name and callsign of the operator who made the qualifying contacts.
  8. A Special event callsign (1x1's or otherwise) will take the place of one of the two allowable club callsigns. Special event calls are not eligible for awards. Each operator using a Special Event callsign will be responsible for announcing the QSL policy for the event call. LOTW and eQSL logging will also be included in the QSL policy.
  9. QSL Cards are generally NOT required to be sent to the club or special event callsign. A card sent to the operator of either should include a notation that the contact was made with the appropriate club/special event callsign at the time of the contact noted on the card.

Get That Signal OUT! PDF Print E-mail

Monday, 09 March 2009 16:18

Getting heard is everyone's on-air goal! Equally important is HEARING! Here are a couple of antenna options for everyone to look over!

First off is the Off-Center Fed (Windom) Antenna. These antennas are rapidly gaining popularity with more and more documented success with these deceptively simple antennas! Here is a PDF document which discusses the design, performance, and construction of an OCF antenna! The great thing about these antennas are that they are multi-band antennas and do NOT require a tuner (in fact, one commercial version warns NOT to use a tuner as overheating the coil in the balun will change its characteristics!). Get the article from http://www.blacksparrowmedia.com/misc_files/The%20OCF-dipole3col.pdf.

Second, the tried-and-true horizontal loop (in use by KU0G) is a full-wave wire antenna. Simple to construct and erect, the antenna's wire length is calculated using the formula 1005/fMHz. Feed this antenna anywhere in the loop.
